The Importance of Gardening Naturally in London

When people think of London, they think of famous skylines, the Thames flowing through the heart of the city, the London Eye and Big Ben.

What many people don’t think of, are gardens.

Throughout London, there are over three million gardens.

That’s a lot of green space that can be vital in bringing some greenery and nature to the big City.

While London is home to many wonderful community gardens and public parks, the high number of private gardens actually only counts for 61% of the homes.

So, with just over half of London homes having a garden, this makes gardening naturally even more important.

At The Southwest London Gardener, we are passionate about being London Gardeners, and also about being natural gardeners.

That’s why we created this guide on why natural gardening is so important in London.

Let’s take a look.

What is Natural Gardening

Natural gardening is using organic and sustainable methods of renovating gardens.

This means using materials such as wood, stone, and plants to create garden structures and designs, as well as reusing materials such as garden waste to create habitats for wildlife.

Natural gardening takes some dedication as there are many products available that do a thorough and efficient job of keeping your garden healthy that fall into the unnatural category, such as some fertilisers.

Spending some time to work out natural methods of gardening and using these in your garden can have a big benefit on the environment, and the overall health of your garden.

And that is an important thing when living in a big city such as London.

Why London is Going Grey

If you’ve ever visited Hyde Park, you would know that it’s a huge area.

This is why it’s so shocking that a recent study found green, London garden space to be transforming to grey space at a rate of 2 and half Hyde Parks a year.

That’s a lot of natural garden to be losing.

So why is this happening?

Well, there are many reasons.

People are busy and may be looking for something low maintenance that doesn’t require tending to regularly.

There have also been new trends in garden design that lean more towards the grey than the green, as well as a desire to turn green space into parking spaces among other things.

Of course, using stone can be natural, and it is a great sustainable material to use, but we do love to see a bit of a green and a lot of wildlife in our gardens.

That’s why we see being natural gardeners in London as so important, and why we love creating the gardens we do.

The Power of a Natural Garden

Natural gardens come packed with benefits, including:

  • Embrace wildlife – A natural garden is a great way of providing habitats for wildlife. Through reusing garden waste and making the most of plants and flowers throughout your garden, you’re sure to see plenty of nature which is often hard to come by when living in the middle of a big city.
  • Reuse and recycle – It’s not cheap to live in London, in fact it is in the top ten most expensive places to live in the UK. Natural gardening involves using organic and reusable materials so can help save plenty of money on things like garden furniture. Items you may have been willing to throw away, and garden waste which may have just gone in the rubbish can be reused to create many wonderful things.
  • Add a touch of nature to your London home – Living in a city often means you don’t get a huge load of space for your garden. With a natural garden, you are using materials such as wood and plants that add a really natural feel to your outside space and can make you forget you’re in the middle of a big city.

Natural Gardens in London

Throughout our years as natural gardeners we have proudly transformed many outdoor areas into wonderful gardens that are brimming with natural materials and lovely features.

If you’re looking to add a touch of greenery to your London home, then get in touch today.

With a natural garden, you have a wealth of options at your fingertips.

Why not use sleepers to create some raised planting beds and grow your own produce?

Or alternatively, you can transform the walls of your garden from plain old brick to bright and beautiful flowers with a vertical climbing wall of plants.

There’s an abundance of great options when it comes to gardening naturally, and we have used it throughout many of our projects, including this stunning family garden in Wimbledon that contains a delightful well-stocked central bed as well as using stone and wood to create a tranquil paved area underneath a pergola.

There’s also this garden renovation in Sutton, in which we took a largely unused space and transformed it into a delightful space for relaxing and socialising. We added a wooden fence to increase privacy, sourced a wide array of plants including jasmine, honeysuckle, and lavender, and took down what was previously a shed to make plenty of space for plenty of natural garden features.
