The South West London Gardener

Practical & Modern Garden , Worcester Park, KT4

Our clients’ existing front garden had large areas of concrete that have moved through time and as a consequence of old tree roots which were protruding and pushing up. The gate and path were offset with an old picket fence as a boundary to the road through which rubbish would blow. There was old, brittle hedging and partial fencing on the boundary side which was patchy and uneven together with an unstable brick wall on the other side. The rainwater pipe is shared between three properties so there was an issue with rainwater flow.

The aim was to create a more practical, usable and visually appealing entrance to our clients’ home. As part of our hard landscaping service we removed everything from the garden apart from some established plants which we relocated to the back garden or donated.

Three areas were created. A raised area with a plant bed made from blockwork, rendered and painted and featuring an acer and evergreen shrubs; a block paved area housing a bin store and an inclined block path from the gate to the front door allowing water to drain freely into the gravel edging. To the perimeter of the garden we fitted new fencing on two sides and a freshly rendered and painted wall on the third. To complement the blockwork and the paving we added contrasting stones around the edges of the paving and the raised bed to allow for ease of drainage and to complement the acer in the central bed.

Final touches were the addition of two ceramic pots with evergreen plants that are easy to maintain.
