Child Friendly Garden Streatham Hill, SW16
The garden presented a blank canvas from the off hosting a large weathered timber pergola over a hard standing patio area and the mid section of the garden decking and some fencing that had seen better days.
With the addition of a baby to the family the client required a safe exploration space for a young child as well as a functional relaxation and dining space for themselves.
Our vision was to lay new child friendly artificial lawn and divide the space using a timber sleeper spanning the width of the garden acting as a divider and providing access to the old raised patio area to the rear. The old pergola was deemed surplus to requirements and was replaced with stylish modern dining furniture.
When it came to planting the garden hosted a couple of welcome surprises. Towards the rear of the space there was a large Phyllostachys nigra that provided ample screening and privacy from neighboring windows. We cleared the stems of foliage, leaving a leafy canopy and sleek black stems. Another gem offered up by the garden was a very mature yet significantly overgrown Wisteria sinensis. This was pruned and re-shaped in order for it to grow in a more controlled manner. An L-shaped raised border made from sleepers was constructed around the two mature plants offering a connection to the sleeper step and providing an occasional spot to perch beneath the foliage.
The clients were over the moon with the transformation and now use the garden when ever possible.
