Cottage Rose Garden, St. Ann's Hill, Wandsworth, SW11
This family home benefits from an enviable and very private walled garden. The space was decked and showing signs of significant use over the years. Adding to this, other timber structures in the garden were looking past their best including a pergola and significantly bulging timber fence panels. Suffice to say it was time for modifying.
The space provided little dedicated room for planting other than a raised bed beneath the old timber pergola, home to two large climbing roses and a substantial grape vine.
Our objective was to create a stylish and welcoming garden with space for growing herbs and cut flowers that would encourage our client’s passion for cooking and love of roses.
We intended to future proof the space. This was achieved by replacing the damaged boundary fences with stylish brick walls to match the property. A significant central area was laid to lawn with a brick patio enclosing it on three sides, making a perfect space for an enviable collection of terracotta pots. A generous bed was constructed and planted with a selection of perennials including a selection of Salvias including S. ‘Amistad,’ S x sylvestris ‘Mainacht’ and S. nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ to name a few.
We addressed the pergola by carefully pruning the mature climbing roses before removing the old structure and replacing with a new bespoke hardwood pergola. This functions as a covered, private seating area benefitting from the evening sun.
To cap off the project and outdoor ‘kitchen’ space was constructed providing housing for the family BBQ.
