A Few Words About the southwest london gardener

the southwest london gardener team

We’re Scott and Mary, and we run The South West London Gardener with a tight team of designers, plantsmen and skilled landscapers. We’ve been creating gardens across South West London since 2017, and somewhere along the way the team has racked up over 50 combined years of experience in horticulture, design and landscaping. If you’ve read the Google reviews and seen the same names crop up (Scott, Mary, David, Stuart, the rest of the crew), that’s not an accident. We don’t farm out the skilled work to whoever’s free that week. The people who quote your job are usually the same ones who build it.

How we got here

The business grew out of something fairly simple. A frustration with how a lot of London gardens were being built. Plastic grass laid over good soil. Concrete poured where planting should have gone. Quick-turnaround jobs that looked tidy in week one and tired by month six. We thought there was room for somebody doing it properly, with a slower hand and an actual horticultural brain behind the design.

So that’s what we set out to be. Natural gardeners first, landscapers second. A garden is a living thing, not a piece of outdoor furniture, and the best ones get more interesting every year rather than less.

What “natural gardening” actually means here

It’s a phrase that gets thrown around a lot, so worth saying what we mean by it.

We work with wood, stone, brick, gravel and plants. Not artificial turf. We source plants from growers and nurseries across the south of England, choose them for the specific conditions of your garden (soil type, light, drainage, exposure), and plant them at the right density to fill out properly. We compost what we can on site. We recycle the rest. We’re a registered Waste Carrier with the Environment Agency, so nothing leaves your job and disappears into a hedgerow somewhere.

Where it makes sense, we’ll keep what’s already in your garden and work around it. A mature shrub that just needs reshaping is worth more than a brand new one in a pot.

What we actually do

The short version: consultation, design, build and ongoing horticulture. The longer version covers garden design (full plans drawn up properly, not sketched on the back of an envelope), hard landscaping (patios, walls, paths, decks, structures), soft landscaping and planting schemes, full garden makeovers, irrigation systems, lawn turfing, ponds, garden lighting, and regular maintenance for clients who want their gardens kept right year-round.

About 95% of every project gets done by our own team. The exceptions are specialist trades like electrics where we’d rather bring in someone certified than wing it.
