garden Design & Landscaping in Battersea
The Southwest London Gardener
Battersea gardens come in every shape you can think of. Narrow Victorian terrace strips off Northcote Road and Lavender Hill. Tucked-away courtyards near Battersea Square. Roof terraces and balconies going up around Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms. We’re a friendly local team who turn unused outdoor space into somewhere you’ll actually want to sit with a coffee, or watch the sun go down over Battersea Park.
We handle everything from full redesigns to clearing out years of neglect: the design, the build, the planting, and the ongoing care afterwards. We’re based just over the river in Wandsworth, so there’s a good chance we’ve already worked on a garden near you.

The SW London Gardeners visit me twice a year, at the beginning and the end of the summer season. They always do a fantastic job tidying up the garden, cutting back the plants and also giving advice on anything that is needed. They make a huge difference in the few hours that they are in my garden. They are extremely professional and friendly, and I feel like I have found my ‘forever gardeners’.Posted on Kenzie Horn2024-06-07Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Scott, Mary, and Stuart were absolutely brilliant. They showed up on time, worked through some pretty terrible weather, and gave great advice about what would work in our space and be easy to maintain. We couldn't be happier with our garden!Posted on Ellie Loughnan2024-02-23Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We chose this company because of the reviews which referenced how considerate and professional this company are, but not even these do full justice to the wonderful team at The South West London Gardener company. Scott and David first took time to listen so carefully to what we wanted, not making us feel rushed and taking all of our requests and hopes seriously. They provided a clear quote within days of coming, and then arranged a date to begin work, all of which they stuck to. Scott, David and Mary then worked tirelessly, through even awful weather, to return a very loved (but neglected and complex) space into a tranquil, beautiful, nature-sensitive oasis. This included removal of huge amounts of garden waste, which they had to do through our flat, and this too was done carefully and thoughtfully. Every detail of work was completed to the highest standard and with care, skill and consideration. The entire team were just a joy to work with. The creativity, warmth and kindness they show, as well as the skill and craftsmanship with which they work, make them stand out to us as one of the best companies we have ever worked with; we won’t hesitate to use them again and again, and to recommend them widely.Posted on Vince & Celia Webb2024-01-15Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Two years ago we used the Southwest London Gardener Ltd to plan and create a new front garden for our suburban home. We were so pleased with the result that when we decided to significantly change the design of our back garden there was no hesitation in again using these horticultural experts. The process begins with detailed discussions on what one wants from a new garden leisure space. Taking account of the aesthetic and practical nature of the garden, computer plans are produced and provide a starting point for the project. It is clear from those initial discussions that you are dealing with a wholly professional company. Throughout the design and creation of the garden you are kept fully appraised of progress and there is flexibility, on both sides, to adapt ideas as the new garden takes shape. We were extremely impressed with all members of the team and it is clear that the company use personnel with wide-ranging skills in design, structure, and horticultural knowledge. The team members are polite, friendly and respectful of your home and garden. They undoubtedly possess a great deal of pride in their work. Once the new garden is created the team provides detailed advice and guidance on the future care of plants, etc. We are delighted with our new back garden and have no hesitation in recommending Southwest London Gardener Ltd.Posted on David Anthony2023-05-31Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Scott, Mary and the rest of the team did a fantastic job with helping us design and landscape our garden. The team were thoroughly professional (yet approachable) and delivered a high quality product. They were happy to amend the original design during the course of the project and were able to offer bespoke solutions to make the most of our space. Would highly recommend.Posted on Priyen Patel2023-05-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We found Scott during a Google search and decided to reach out to him after reading some very favourable reviews. Scott put us at ease as soon as we met him - he seemed genuinely interested in our project and keen to help. He also took the time to chat to our daughters, as he knew that their input was important as well - a true indication of how caring and considerate he is. When we later got a puppy, Scott was also sure to factor her needs in... When the work started, we quickly realised Scott only used extremely polite and engaging staff to work alongside - each employee has been a joy to have in & out of our house. Once the initial clearance was done, we kept in contact and he would check in periodically, often over a cup of coffee and contemplating the aspects of the garden that worked for us. He took the time to listen to our views and was always pragmatic in his approach. When we were ready to move onto the next steps, we talked at length about the project, and Scott made many notes and asked for a few days to digest everything we spoke about. His resulting drawings and project plans encapsulated extremely well what we had discussed, with a couple of suggestions from him based on his musings and knowledge of our garden (soil type, aspect, features etc.). As we were embarking on various different projects (garden/garden room/remodelling inside the house) it was imperative that all three teams involved were able to liaise with each other. We set up a meeting for all parties and found each group was willing to work alongside each other in a measured, considerate way. While main decisions were made with each contractor, we set up an email group for communication purposes. Scott in particular, as the man 'in the middle' between the house and the garden room, was extremely good at communicating some of the key dates, deliveries, measurements etc. While much of the garden work in these stages was clearance and preparation, Scott stressed that we should wait until the garden room was finished before making detailed plans, knowing full well that the 'feel' of our space would change once that was completed. It is this patience that I believe sets him apart from others who may choose to wow you with their vision (product placements/plant selections) at an earlier stage. When the garden room was nearly complete, Scott returned for the next stages - the friendly team now also included Mary, Scott's partner. It was quickly apparent that she is a key piece of the Southwest London Gardener jigsaw. Professional, hardworking and extremely talented, yet very unassuming (and an absolute pleasure to have around!). As the gardening works progressed, we discussed freely each aspect being tackled, and weighed up pros & cons of various planting/direction/material options, Scott & Mary provided much guidance during these stages and really helped us make some key decisions. We are just so happy with what they have achieved for us. They kept to their timings, kept to budget (where plans changed, reflection on pricing was done swiftly and fairly) and have given us a dream garden which we are looking forward to enjoying and seeing develop over the coming years.Posted on Rachel Baxter2023-02-25Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This team are amazing. They designed and landscaped our garden to a very high quality. Scott and Mary had so many great ideas and suggestions which transformed the garden for us. It was so easy to leave it in their hands to create the best space. They were also a pleasure to have around and were extremely friendly and considerate. We look forward to having them back to help maintain the beautiful garden they created.Posted on Matt Lilley2022-11-21Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Scott, Mary and the team did a fantastic job on a complete redesign and renovation of my garden (lifting of existing paving, replacing fencing, installing a deck and astroturf and planting). They were always professional and a pleasure to deal with. I really appreciated Scott's advice in terms of planning the project and formalising a design that would work well in the space. Would fully recommend!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Landscape Gardeners Local to Battersea
Our team offers a professional landscaping service throughout Battersea, from Battersea Park and Queenstown Road down to Clapham Junction and the Shaftesbury Park estate. We work with trained experts in both hard and soft landscaping.
What’s the difference? Think about what you’re building and what you’re building it with. Lay a new patio, or put in decking, and you’re doing hard landscaping. Plant up a border, or soften a courtyard with climbers and pots, and that’s soft landscaping.
Battersea’s housing stock gives us both ends of the spectrum on a regular basis. Victorian terraces around Northcote Road and Lavender Hill tend to have long, narrow gardens. Get the hard landscaping wrong here and the space feels like a corridor. Apartment blocks near Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms bring small courtyard gardens, where drainage, planters and weight-bearing surfaces matter as much as the design itself. Our Battersea landscape gardeners can help either way, and the two disciplines nearly always work best together.

Battersea Garden Designers
The design stage is the most important part of any garden transformation. It’s where we take stock of your space and put a plan together before anything gets touched.
Battersea gardens present a particular challenge: space is tight. Many of the terraced gardens off Battersea Rise, Latchmere Road and around Clapham Junction run long and narrow, and often sit overlooked by neighbouring flats. A well-considered design matters more here than it would in a bigger garden, because there’s less room to hide mistakes.
Our garden design team has years of experience. We get to know you, your budget, and how you want to use your Battersea garden. Entertaining, growing your own, giving the kids room to play, or simply somewhere quiet that isn’t overlooked. Then we build a plan around it and bring your ideas to life.
Garden Makeovers & Clearances in Battersea
Some Battersea gardens just need a tidy. Others, particularly the older Victorian terraces, need a complete rethink after years of neglect.
This is the work we like best. We start from scratch and build something that makes your garden feel like a proper extension of your Battersea home. These gardens often come with awkward proportions, boundary walls that have seen better days, and sightlines overlooked from several angles by neighbouring flats and mansion blocks. That’s where a full transformation makes the biggest difference.
A makeover might mean lifting a cracked old patio. It might mean fixing drainage that’s been causing problems for years, adding privacy screening without shutting the space in, or reworking the layout entirely to suit how you live now. Our designers sit down with you, understand what you want from the space, and put together a solid plan before any digging starts.
Tidying Up Your Battersea Garden
A Battersea garden can get away from you fast, especially through autumn and winter when the wind picks up along the river and the nights draw in.
If your garden needs a new lease of life, we’re the team to call. Cutting back overgrown shrubs. Clearing green waste sustainably. Removing dead or diseased plants and putting in new ones. Getting on top of a space that’s been left alone for a season or two. Not everyone has the time to keep on top of a garden, and that’s why we’re here.
Before long, you’ll be proud to show off your Battersea garden rather than avoiding it. If this sounds like something that would help, get in touch today!
We also offer gardening services in surrounding areas such as:
Southfields, Earlsfield, Balham, Richmond, Putney, Barnes, Sheen, Raynes Park
Battersea Gardening FAQs
We’re based just across the river in Wandsworth, at The Gatehouse, 1 Armoury Way, a short hop from Battersea Bridge and Battersea Park. Battersea is one of our core areas. We regularly work on gardens around Northcote Road, Lavender Hill, Clapham Junction, Battersea Square and down towards Nine Elms and the Power Station. Being this close means we respond quickly and know the quirks of Battersea gardens, from narrow Victorian terrace plots to new-build roof terraces. Call us on 07966 554841 or use the contact form on this page.
Battersea has some of the most varied outdoor space in Southwest London. We work on long, narrow Victorian terrace gardens, courtyard gardens tucked behind period conversions, and newer developments around Battersea Power Station. Each type needs a different approach.
Yes, and it’s one of the most common jobs we get in Battersea. Many gardens in the area are compact and overlooked by neighbouring flats or mansion blocks, so the design has to work harder. We use planting, screening and layout choices to build privacy and make the most of every metre, whether that’s a ground-floor terrace garden or a small courtyard behind a converted house.
Yes. Not everyone has the time to keep on top of a garden, particularly once the colder months set in and the wind off the river picks up. We offer regular maintenance visits covering pruning, tidying, dead-plant removal and sustainable green waste clearance, so your Battersea garden looks good all year round rather than for a few weeks after a big tidy-up.
We’re registered waste carriers with the Environment Agency, Licence No. CBDU413066, and all green waste is handled sustainably. We recycle and compost wherever possible instead of sending everything to landfill. Whether it’s a one-off clearance of an overgrown Battersea garden or ongoing waste removal as part of regular maintenance, we handle it properly.
