The South West London Gardener

Garden Design and Landscaping Richmond

Our client’s existing garden was very underutilised. For a large family home, it had a small patio, barely enough space to put a table and two chairs on, a brick bordered raised lawn area with a step directly as you come out of the house. To the entire rear a block-paved area containing space for car parking, a raised trampoline and a large storage shed which dominated the whole of the rear garden. To the right-hand side was an area that the bins were stored.

The objective was to design a more modern, practical, and aesthetically pleasing family garden suitable for not only a family of 6 but for entertaining much larger groups.

This is what we proposed and undertook; starting with hard landscaping we removed all existing hard surfaces and levelled the garden, removing approximately 20 tons of hard materials – repurposed all the block paving – and enlarged the patio physically and visually. We used light porcelain paving making it spacious enough to include a barbecue space which will encourage dining and socialising. We created a matching wide pathway that led from the patio to the driveway and a new area to site the existing trampoline sitting on top of soft artificial grass, which will provide a great play space. A large silver birch was planted along the road boundary side to not only add privacy but to soften the brick wall. In the far-right hand corner of the garden we built a bespoke wood storage shed to fit into an awkward triangular space and we removed all the bin stores and resisted them to the newly built bin store in the front garden. To finish of the rear garden area, we added a bespoke upright bicycle storage unit which was able to accommodate 6 bikes securely with easy access whilst taking up less space than the previous shed.

The driveway was constructed from resin to keep the contemporary and modern feel to the garden and blend in well with the patio and pathway. To soften the view of the parked vehicle and the newly added hard surfaces we added carefully selected and easily maintained plants and completed the greenery with a new turf lawn. Finally for the back garden we supplied and installed new, made to measure wooden courtyard gates.

Up and downlighters were placed on all perimeters to give a warm glow and external power and complement the planting.

At the front we transformed a garden which had been forgotten and was never used by building a bespoke redwood bin and recycling store set on a newly paved area creating step free access to wheel the bins in and out. A climbing rose planted, Purbeck chippings to complement the paving were laid over the previously weed-riddled surface and a new planter containing a magnolia grandiflora directly in front of the front bay (and conveniently hiding the manhole cover) to allow for more privacy and window boxes refreshed with planting that will be easy to maintain and provide good coverage.

The result a space for a family to play, entertain, dine, and enjoy with adequate space for all their requirements.
