Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get a proper itemised quote, or just a vague number scribbled on the back of an envelope?
A proper one. Vague numbers are how people end up with nasty surprises halfway through, and we’d rather you trusted us at the end than just at the start. You’ll get a written, itemised quote that spells out materials, labour, and waste removal, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for and what isn’t included. If something changes once we’re underway, say we uncover an old concrete base nobody knew about, we’ll talk to you about it before we spend your money, not after.
What happens to all the waste and rubbish from my garden?
It does not get fly-tipped down a country lane, which sadly is more common in this trade than it should be. As a Registered Waste Carrier, we dispose of everything legally and responsibly, and waste removal is built into your quote so it’s not a surprise line item later. Better still, we recycle and upcycle as much as we possibly can, we recycled over 11 tonnes of garden waste in 2024 alone, turning green waste into compost rather than landfill. That cracked old bench or pile of bricks often has more life left in it than you’d think.
I don't actually know what I want yet. Can you still help?
That’s most people, and it’s genuinely fine. ‘I want it to feel nicer and I don’t want to spend every weekend on it’ is a perfectly good starting point. Part of our job is asking the right questions, how you want to use the space, who’s using it, what you love and loathe, and turning your half-formed ideas into a clear plan. You don’t need to arrive with a mood board and a plant list. You just need to let us in and tell us honestly how you’d like your garden to feel.
Do I need a garden designer, or just a landscaper?
It depends on how far you’re going. If you know exactly what you want and it’s fairly straightforward, a skilled landscaper can crack on. If you’re reworking the whole space, juggling levels, sightlines, planting and budget, a bit of design thinking up front saves you from expensive mistakes, the kind that are very hard to undo once the paving’s down. The happy news is you don’t have to choose between two separate firms here: we handle the whole journey, from understanding what you need, through design, build and planting, under one roof.
This all sounds good, what's the actual first step?
Just get in touch, there’s no commitment and no hard sell. The first step is a conversation and a visit: we come and see your garden, listen to what’s frustrating you and what you’re hoping for, and talk through what’s realistic for your space and budget. From there we’ll put together a clear, itemised quote so you can decide in your own time. You can call us on 07966 554841 or email enquire@thesouthwestlondongardener.co.uk. The hardest part is usually picking up the phone, after that, it’s our job to make it easy.
I've completely let my garden go. Is it too far gone to save?
It almost never is, and you really don’t need to be embarrassed. We’ve walked into gardens that were more bramble than border, and they’re often the most rewarding to bring back. More to the point, an overgrown garden is usually hiding good bones: established plants worth keeping, decent soil, mature trees doing quiet, useful work. We start by working out what’s already thriving and build from there, rather than stripping everything back to bare earth. It’s better for your budget and better for the wildlife that’s quietly moved in while you weren’t looking.
